Biographical/Historical:     The Bank of the State of Florida was the first bank chartered by the State of Florida. The 1855 special act of the General Assembly that granted the charter imposed strict limits on the holding of and trading in property and produce. This was in reaction to the rampant land and cotton speculation that had dominated bank activities during the Territorial period. Redemption of notes was required to be made with specie. The State allowed the Bank to establish branches at Lake City, Newnansville, Tampa, and a few other locations in Middle and West Florida.

Summary:     This collection contains volumes with account information of the individuals and businesses that used the Bank of the State of Florida. Some entries are concerned with the financial well-being of the institution itself but are scattered throughout all the volumes. Volume four is a checkbook with stubs for issued checks dating from 1860 to 1864.
