Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Railroad Company incorporated in 1853 with a proposed route from Fernandina to Cedar Key. Its first train ran in 1861, but the Civil War caused significant troubles to the Florida Railroad. Company president, former U.S. Senator David Yulee, prevented the use of the rails belonging to the FRR in the completion of a rail link to Georgia and the rest of the Confederacy to the north. The road could not escape serious disruption from the wartime activities of federal troops in Florida. Due to those disruptions, the company was not able to make the payments and debt service required by law. Because of its inability to pay its indebtedness, agents of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund seized the company on October 6, 1866 and sold its assets. This included the lands held by the company as well as physical plant and stock.

Summary:     The collection contains records concerning some of the financial activities of the Florida Railroad Company, such as the purchase of stock shares, registration of land held and later sold, and dealings with the U.S. Direct Tax Commission. The stock share books set out who purchased stock and whether the purchaser was acting on his own behalf or as an agent for another. The tract books delineate the land owned by the railroad by legal description and how that land was disposed of. The volume dealing with the U.S. Direct Tax Commission shows much of the same information as the tract books.  It also indicates how the taxes owed to the United States were apportioned for the period when Florida was part of the Confederacy.
