Biographical/Historical:     Brodie and Pettes was a merchant firm near the port of Saint Marks, Florida. The business largely focused on receiving cotton and tobacco from labor farms in the area and shipping these materials on to market cities, such as New Orleans. The merchant firm compensated contributing producers with advance credits until it received sales funds.

Summary:     The collection contains volumes recording cotton or tobacco received from labor farmers, the names of vessels upon which the produce was shipped, and amount and type of goods that were later conveyed to the local inhabitants. Each labor farmer entered their unique proprietary mark next to the number of bales received. The entries also include notes concerning the type of delivery vehicle and the name of the driver, along with the amount and ownership of the cotton or tobacco.
