Biographical/Historical:     Baker and Son operated in Apalachicola, Florida. Although the exact type of business is unknown, the company shipped goods for companies and private buyers. Many of the vessels plied the rivers to the north of Apalachicola. They shipped freight that contained building materials (e.g. brick), tools, and other types of goods that were not readily obtainable in the river valley areas.

Summary:     This collection contains bills of lading created by the firm of Baker and Son of Apalachicola, Florida. These bills record the type of cargo, the vessel upon which it was loaded, the master (captain) of the vessel, and the destination of that vessel. Most of the freight listed on the bills for vessels bound for New Orleans was cotton.
