Biographical/Historical:     In 1883, former Reconstruction Governor David Shelby Walker (1865-1868), founded one of the first public or, "community" libraries in Florida. Walker donated the building and his private library served as the nucleus of the collection. Although called the Florida University Library, it was not affiliated with any university. After Walker's death in 1901, the Library was renamed the David S. Walker Library.

By the 1970s the Library was more of a curiosity than a working repository and it dispersed most of its collection of rare and special editions to other libraries in the state. In 1976, following the preservation movement lead by the Historic Tallahassee Preservation Board, Springtime Tallahassee took over the Walker Library building and used it as a visitor's center.

Summary:     The collection consists of the Walker Librarian's reports from 1891 to 1928 and miscellaneous records from 1910 to 1917. The reports contain information on the financial status of the Library. The miscellaneous records include articles and lists of books donated to the Library.
