The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:     United Press International (UPI) is a major news service headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida. In 1907, newspaper publisher E. W. Scripps founded United Press, which merged in 1958 with International News Service. UPI flourished in the 1960s and 1970s but suffered from decades of mismanagement and missed opportunities beginning in the 1980s. UPI continues to operate under News World Communications.

Summary:     This series contains the press files of United Press International (UPI) maintained by the Tallahassee office. The files contain teletype and newspaper copies of UPI articles, photographs, and other supporting materials. The Tallahassee office, which closed in 1991, used these files as reference materials. The clippings document the political, educational, and social conditions in Florida during this period. Major topics covered are capital punishment, criminal justice, universities, insurance, natural resources, public utilities, taxation, and transportation.
