Biographical/Historical:     Columbus Welch was born in 1857 in Millport, Alabama. He moved to Cottondale in Jackson County, Florida, in 1884 to open a general merchandise store, which he ran until 1926. While concentrating on the operation of the store, Welch also bought and sold cotton and sporadically ran a lumber mill.

Summary:     This collection contains the papers of Columbus Welch related to his business activities in Cottondale, Florida. The correspondence is from 1889 to 1911, with the bulk from 1891. There are 37 volumes of account books for the general store and lumber businesses from 1887 to 1925.

The records include some documentation of the cotton ginning business, including "ginning ticket[s]" for the harvest period of 1904. Welch used these chits to report on the amount of production and money made. The collection includes receipts documenting the loading of cotton seed into wagons at the gin. There is also a large amount of correspondence from a cotton factor located in New Orleans and it denotes Welch's participation in the cotton market.
