Biographical/Historical:     Robert Henry Tate was from Hall County, Georgia. He married Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cantrell on February 14, 1864. Tate left his bride shortly thereafter to serve as a member of E Company, Second Florida Infantry.

After the war, the Tates stayed in Georgia for two years. They had a child in October 1865. From 1868 to 1870, they lived in Platte County, Missouri, where they had two more children. In 1870, the family moved to Mitchell County, Kansas, where they homesteaded. The Tates had seven more children before Robert died on July 9, 1884.

Summary:     This collection consists of photostatic copies of eight letters drafted by Robert Henry Tate while serving as a member of E Company, Second Florida Infantry, to his wife Lizzie. The letters, written between March 29 and September 3 of 1864, document Tate's wartime experiences. The letters seem to indicate that Tate was in action around the Wilderness, Petersburg, and Richmond. The collection also includes typewritten transcripts of the letters and the transcription of another letter, dated May 28, 1864, that was too fragile to photocopy.
