Biographical/Historical:     Sir Edward J. Reed was a British naval architect and civil engineer. He was also an investor in land development, drainage projects, and railroads in Florida at the end of the 1800s. In 1881, Hamilton Disston had purchased 4 million acres of state lands and created a company to build canals and drain the swamplands on that land. To help finance the company, Disston sold 2 million acres of his land to Reed in 1882. Over the next 20 years, Reed resold the land he purchased.

Summary:     The collection contains papers relating to the business investments of Sir Edward J. Reed in Florida. It is primarily correspondence to Reed and his agents in London from Jacksonville land agents. The types of records include letters, tax receipts, deeds, mortgages, and survey maps. The collection documents Reed's ownership and sale of land in Manatee and Hillsborough Counties, which were originally part of the Disston purchase. There also is a stock certificate for the Florida Transit Railroad.
