Biographical/Historical:     William Cabot Hodges, born in Ashton, Illinois, in 1876, attended Indiana University and the University of Illinois. In 1896, he moved to Tallahassee, where he practiced law. In June 1917, he married Margaret Wilson, and the couple made their residence at Goodwood Plantation.

    In 1922, Hodges won election to the Florida Senate from the eighth district and represented Leon County for 18 years. In 1935, he served as President of the Senate. Hodges was known as "Homestead Bill" for championing the homestead tax exemption. He twice ran unsuccessfully for governor. In 1912, he ran as a "Bull Moose" candidate, and in 1936 as a Democrat. Senator Hodges died in Tallahassee in 1940.

Summary:     This collection contains printed speeches and newspaper clippings relating to William Cabot Hodges from 1934 to 1947. The speech files contain printed addresses delivered by Hodges and three campaign pamphlets for the 1936 Governor's race, detailing Hodges platform. The newspaper clippings are obituaries and articles on Hodges' political career and life at Goodwood Plantation.
