Biographical/Historical:     The Hanna family lived in Gadsden County, Florida. Brothers Hamilton and Calvin Hanna were both Confederate soldiers who served in Company B, Eighth Florida Infantry Regiment. Hamilton Hanna died in August 1862 at the Second Battle of Manassas, while Calvin remained in service until the end of the war.

Summary:     This collection documents the Hanna family of Gadsden County, Florida. It consists primarily of letters to and from brothers Calvin and Hamilton Hanna. Although they wrote several letters from Civil War camps around Tallahassee, most of correspondence is from their father, John Burrell Hanna, to his sons. Also included are letters from various other relatives. The correspondence contains information on local activities, farm and family news, and military matters. The wartime letters date from 1862 to 1864.

    In addition to this correspondence, there are individual family letters from 1860 and 1875, military records, an 1863 power of attorney from Calvin to his father, an 1857 list of items purchased by J. B. Hanna, and an 1862 bill for blacksmith work. Typescripts of most of the photocopied original items are available, and typescripts of several letters that are no longer available in original form are also included.
