Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     In 1948, brothers David A. (1919-2000) and George D. Avant (1921-2007) opened L'Avant Studios in Tallahassee, Florida, at 207 West Park Avenue. As commercial photographers, they photographed Leon County area people and businesses for nearly forty years. Prior to opening their studio, both brothers served in the military, David in the Air Force and George in the Navy. The Avant family was active in the Tallahassee community: the brothers were also real estate developers; charter members of Springtime Tallahassee and David portrayed Andrew Jackson in 1982-1983; and along with their father, David A. Avant Sr., the brothers were charter members of the Tallahassee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. David A. Avant Jr. was also an amateur historian and author of several books, including a five volume genealogical reference series titled "Some Southern Colonial Families."

Summary:     This series consists of over 73,000 negatives taken by the commercial photography studio, L'Avant Studios in Tallahassee, Florida. Subject matter includes personal portraits, wedding candids, and local scenery, with the majority being studio portraits. Approximately one-quarter of the negatives are in color.
