Biographical/Historical:     The Jacksonville Journal was a weekday afternoon newspaper in the Jacksonville, Florida area. It began publication in 1887 and ceased publication in 1988 after a century of competition with its sister newspaper the Florida Times-Union. When the Journal merged with the Florida Times-Union, what remained of the Journal's photo morgue (1951-1959) went to the Florida Photographic Collection.

Summary:     This collection consists of about 25,000 acetate negatives taken for the Jacksonville Journal in the 1950s. The collection contains news, society, and sports images, including public officials (mayors, judges) and other individuals; groups (4-H, YWCA, Elks, scouting groups); buildings (churches, schools, museums, libraries, fire stations); events (graduations, holiday celebrations, baseball games, banquets, dances, award presentations, motor vehicle accidents, fires); and street scenes.
