Elizabeth Lucinda (Grice) Taylor was born in North Carolina on August 25, 1830. She married William Newton Taylor, born June 8, 1825, and the couple moved to Duval County, Florida to establish a labor farm near Black Creek. Elizabeth and William had five children: Sarah B. (1852-1873), Elizabeth Roberta (b. 1854), Charles Theodore (1856-1873), William Newton II (1860-1916), and Leslie Alexandra (1866-1909).
The Taylor family spread out across northern Florida during the late 1800s, establishing residences in Leon and Wakulla counties while maintaining property in Duval County. Various marriages connect the Taylor family to other noted Florida families - Collins, Hatch, Hollingsworth, Grice, Moseley, and Tyler - such as the marriage of William Newton Taylor II to Mary Charlotte (Collins) Taylor in 1889.

The collection contains a variety of materials relate to the Taylor family of Duval County, Florida. The collection includes correspondence from 1852 to 1960, Charles Theodore Taylor's 1873 account book, the journals of Elizabeth L. Taylor (1850s) and Mary C. Taylor (1920), genealogical papers, and photographs and tintypes.
Of interest in this collection is the 1850s journal of Elizabeth L. Taylor in Black Creek, Duval County, wherein she recorded the birth and death dates of several enslaved Black persons from 1850 to 1863, as well as the approximate 1830s birth years of two enslaved Black women. The seventeen recorded births include: Mary Brown and her son George, Fanny, Harriet, Mary Branson's son Charles, Maria, Lizzie, Florence, "Larry's boy," "Bill's son Bull Sr," "Pleasant Till's baby," Emily, Ellen, Allmand, "Dora Ansy Till's 3rd daughter," "Capitola, Mary's daughter," and "Austin Till's boy." The ten recorded deaths include: Mary Branson, Mary Brown, Maria, Emanuel, Emily, Capitola, Vina, Hepsey, Old Dr. Slick, and "Dora Till's daughter."
