Biographical/Historical:     Reubin O'Donovan Askew was born on September 11, 1928, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Askew received a bachelor's degree in Public Administration from Florida State University in 1951 and a law degree from the University of Florida in 1956. He began his public service career by serving as Assistant County Solicitor of Escambia County from 1956 to 1958. In 1858 he won election to the State House of Representatives from Escambia County and to the State Senate in 1962.

    In 1970, Senator Askew ran for the Office of Governor of Florida. Askew and his running mate, Secretary of State Thomas Adams, faced a field of four in the first Democratic primary. Defeating Attorney General Earl Faircloth in a runoff election, he went on to defeat incumbent Governor Claude Kirk. Askew became Florida's thirty-seventh Governor on January 5, 1971. Reelected in 1974, Askew held the office until January 1979.
