Biographical/Historical:     Born in Kentucky in 1848, D.W.C. Willis was a lawyer in Franklin County, Florida, during the late-19th century. In July 1873, he married Emma Marks of Apalachicola. He died in 1880 in Franklin County.

Summary:     The collection consists of personal and business papers of D.W.C. Willis related to his law practice in Franklin County, Florida, during the late-19th century. Personal papers in the collection refer to witnesses, litigants, and lawyers involved in the cases Willis handled. Correspondence from clients and court personnel date from 1848 to 1878. These letters are detailed and supply a graphic picture of some court cases for this time period.  In addition, there are a number of court records, including writs, bills of complaints, petitions for divorces, and judgements.

    The collection also includes a leaflet on presidential candidate Samuel Tilden that contains the Democratic response to Republican charges that Tilden did nothing to help overthrow the Tweed Ring of Tammany Hall. Another pamphlet denounces candidate George F. Drew for his Union sympathies during the Civil War.
