Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Land Building and Loan Association opened in Tallahassee, Florida, in May 1870. Its establishing board elected its officers on May 7 and held its first official meeting on May 9. Board members included President Charles H. Walton, Secretary William Steward, and Treasurer J.T. (Jesse Talbot) Bernard. At the time, Walton also worked as a publisher and Bernard served as a Leon County Judge. The Land Building and Loan Association operated until at least November 1873, after which there is no known record of its business.

Summary:     The collection contains two volumes from the Florida Land Building and Loan Association in Tallahassee, Florida: a minute book and a stockholder's ledger. The ledger lists stockholders and their accounts with the company. It documents the date (month and year) of account activity, number of payment installment, number of shares, amount of installment, amount of loan, interest, fines, and notations for those who withdrew and paid off their accounts. The minutes provide information on the board members, their actions, and stockholders who obtained loans from the association from May 1870 until November 1873.
