From March to December of 1821, Jackson served as the Federal Military Commissioner of Florida, resigning as soon as Florida's territorial government organized.

Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall" Jackson served as a Confederate general during the Civil War and was a prominent figure in the Eastern Theater of the war. Prior to this, Jackson commanded forces in Florida in the late-1840s, the time between the Second and Third Seminole Wars during which U.S. troops attempted to forcibly remove the Seminoles from Florida.

Robert E. Lee was a Confederate general and commander of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. In 1849, after the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Lee worked with the Board of Engineers to inspect Florida's entire coast, updating maps and making military recommendations accordingly.
