Biographical/Historical:     Established in 1867 as the D.A. Sanborn National Insurance Diagram Bureau, the Sanborn Map Company of New York produced specialized and detailed fire insurance maps for the use of fire insurance companies and underwriters. The maps show at a glance, through the use of symbol keys, the character of fire insurance risks of residential and commercial property by detailed street sections for cities and towns in the United States. Since the 1950s, the fire insurance maps are no longer widely used by the fire insurance industry but the Sanborn Map Company still produces reprints of unrevised maps and some updated maps.

Summary:     The collection contains seven volumes of the Sanborn Map Company's fire insurance maps. Five volumes, printed in 1949 and updated through 1959, cover Jacksonville. Two volumes, printed in 1923 and updated through 1934, cover St. Petersburg. The collection also contains nine rolls of microfilm with maps from most major cities and towns in Florida from 1945 to 1987. These are revisions of maps created in the 1920s and 1930s.

The maps show existing lots and structures and are indexed by street name and special structures such as churches and businesses. The maps provide a historic record of urban growth in these Florida cities.
