Biographical/Historical:     Jo W. Conibear, a long-time resident of Lakeland, Florida, has been involved in many civic activities and has been especially concerned with the plight of handicapped people. In 1972, she spearheaded a city-wide movement to remove architectural barriers such as curbs and stairs at curbsides and building entries to make those places accessible to handicapped people. She documented the movement in a scrapbook. For her efforts, the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, awarded her the George Washington Honor Medal, which recognizes responsible citizens.

Summary:     The collection contains Lakeland Handicapped Project scrapbook created and maintained by Jo W. Conibear. She spearheaded the project to eliminate architectural barriers for better access to handicapped persons. The scrapbook contains correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and programs.
