The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:     Established in the 1838 Constitution, the post of Comptroller succeeded the Territorial Auditor of Public Accounts and assumed his duties as the state's chief fiscal officer. The Comptroller's Office examined, audited and settled all accounts, claims, and demands against the state. It supervised banking institutions, sale of securities, and collection of revenue and taxes. The Comptroller was also responsible for collecting unclaimed financial and tangible property from forgotten or abandoned accounts and safety deposit boxes.

Summary:     The collection contains records that the Comptroller's Office collected as abandoned property. Included in the collection are marriage certificates, a 1734 indenture certificate, an 1874 will and several items concerning air mail: an envelope, a stamp, a newspaper clipping and a 1918 letter from the Aerial League of America. Also included is a 1922-1923 Rand-McNally road map of Florida and the Southeast.
