Biographical/Historical:     When France, Spain and Britain signed the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Britain, which then divided the land into East and West Florida. East Florida was everything east of the Apalachicola River; West Florida was the land between the Apalachicola and Mississippi Rivers. East and West Florida remained British colonies until 1783 when Britain and Spain signed the Treaty of Versailles (part of the Peace of Paris) and Britain ceded the entire Florida territory to Spain.

Summary:     The collection contains the deposition and coroner's report stating the facts behind the death of two sailors when a schooner capsized in Mobile Bay, part of West Florida. The deposition was made before William Clifton, Chief Justice of His Majesty's Province of West Florida. Arthur Gordon, Coroner, conducted the inquest. John Eliot, Captain General and Governor in Chief of His Majesty's Province of West Florida, certified and affixed the seal of the province to the documents.
