Biographical/Historical:     Born in Ireland in 1840, Patrick Jeremias Lovett came to the United States with his parents in 1843. The Lovett family settled in Apalachicola, Florida, in 1845 and established a general store. Lovett enlisted in the Milton (Florida) Light Artillery at the beginning of the Civil War and saw action at Olustee and at Natural Bridge. Returning to Apalachicola at the war's end, he held several positions in city government; was associated with the Lovett general store; and was sexton for the Apalachicola cemetery.

During his career in public service, Lovett was responsible for keeping many types of records, including census, tax and burial records. He kept these records in his office at the family general store. Because of this, the city records he collected survived when the Franklin County courthouse burned in 1887.

Summary:     The collection contains the papers of Patrick Jeremias Lovett that document the history of the City of Apalachicola and the Lovett General Store, as well as some of his personal interests. The bulk of the papers are city records that reflect the various public offices that Lovett held from 1873 to 1889 and include a city census, city marshal records, lists of registered voters, city tax records, harbor dues, cemetery records, and beef marks and brands.

Other records include business records related to the Lovett General Store, the Central Florida Mill and Lumber Company, the steam tugboat "Lottie," and the BC Baseball Club. In addition, the collection contains a typed transcription of the Ordinances of the City of Apalachicola from 1839 to 1871 and a 1962 manuscript by Rose Gibbons Lovett, titled "Trilogy of Tri-River: Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, and Flint, 1839-1871."
