Biographical/Historical:     In the mid-19th century, railroad construction and travel flourished in the United States. As the industry brought large numbers of people to remote areas and introduced unique hazards and injuries, railroad doctors and surgeons became necessary medical specialists. In November 1893, the surgeons of the Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Halifax Railroad met in St. Augustine, Florida, to organize the East Coast Line Surgical Association. Their objective was to create a medical association for the mutual protection of the railroad surgeons and to hold quarterly meetings for discussion of medical and surgical issues. Later, the railroad's name changed to the Florida East Coast Railway and in 1896, the association changed its name to the Florida East Coast Railway Surgical Association.

Summary:     The collection contains a photocopy of the meeting minutes of the Florida East Coast Railway Association and its predecessor, the East Coast Line Surgical Association. The minutes document the topics discussed, decisions made and actions taken by the association.
