Biographical/Historical:     In 1912, the Florida Education Board set aside funds for introducing agricultural extension work in Florida. Eleven county agents traveled across the state to teach small groups of women about the cultivation and canning of produce. In 1914, the Smith-Lever Extension Act established a cooperative system of extension services in agriculture and home economics and provided funds for a full-time home demonstration agent in each county. The scope of instruction widened to include sewing, nutrition and health, home beautification, poultry and dairying. Club members participated in planning and implementing many community activities including rally days, demonstration tours, and annual county contests. They also assisted in organizing several women's clubs and 4-H clubs.

The Thrift Home Demonstration Club of Kissimmee organized in August 1938 with five charter members. It stressed good home life for family, community and country. Members participated in home demonstration flower shows and attended county council meetings.

Summary:     The collection consists of a minute book and a scrapbook created and maintained by members of the Thrift Home Demonstration Club of Kissimmee. The minute book is a record of club meetings in 1948 and the scrapbook contains a variety of materials that document the activities and interests of the club. It includes newspaper clippings, poetry, correspondence and photographs from 1941 to 1955.
