Biographical/Historical:     L'Unione Italiana, the second Latin Club organized in Tampa, began in 1894 to provide medical care to its members, most of whom belonged to the Italian immigrant population in Ybor City. It was similar in all aspects to the other Latin clubs of the area. A general assembly of members elected the governing board of directors; the only paid officer was the secretary. The club housed a theater, bar, cantina, gymnasium, dance halls and a library. Most importantly, it provided group medical and death insurance through the collection of dues. Though it did not provide a hospital, the club staffed three physicians for consultations and paid for hospitalization, often at the Centro Asturiano Hospital. Also, L'Unione Italiana maintained a cemetery for the exclusive use of members and paid $50.00 toward the funeral expenses of members and their families.

Summary:     The collection contains a microfilm copy of the records of L'Unione Italiana Club of Tampa. Included are lists of active members (1850-1935), insurance papers, deceased and inactive members, and a cemetery book (1935-1975). The cemetery book includes the name of the deceased, age at death, date of death, officiating funeral home and location in cemetery.
