Biographical/Historical:     The Centro Asturiano en Tampa, was organized in 1902 in Tampa, Florida, as a branch of the Centro Asturiano de La Havana of Cuba. As with the other Latin clubs, any white male who could pass a physical exam was admitted; most of its members, however, were of Spanish descent. The club provided a gymnasium, theater, bar, cantina, dance floor and library. La Beneficencia Asturiano was affiliated with the Centro to provide medical and financial support to club members and their families. Dues for both organizations covered social, medical and death benefits. Members requiring hospitalization stayed at the Centro Asturiano Hospital at no charge; non-members paid from $8.00 to $12.00 a day. The club also handled funeral expenses up to $60.00 and buried members in the club cemetery, the Cementerio Del Asturiano En Tampa.
