Biographical/Historical:     Founded in 1891, the Centro Espanol de Tampa was a social and fraternal club that provided financial and medical assistance to its members in need. It is the oldest of Tampa's Latin clubs, and over the years has been a haven for Spanish and Cuban immigrants, most of whom worked in cigar factories. Recreational and educational benefits of the club included a library, classes in English and Spanish, a band and theatrical shows. The club pledged from the start to have no political, religious or labor connections, and forbade discussion of these subjects at the club. As with other Latin clubs, any healthy member of other racial backgrounds could join, but most of the members were of Latin descent.

Apart from the companionship the club fostered, it also provided medical and financial support services. A member could receive the whole range of medical care and could stay at the club's hospital without charge for as long as necessary. When requested, the club provided funeral services for members. Other services were set up to help members who were sick or unemployed.

Summary:     This collection contains a microfilm copy of the Centro Espanol de Tampa anniversary books, which provide historical reviews of the organization on its 50th (1941) and 75th (1966) anniversaries. The collection also contains records of the Centro Espanol Cemetery from 1891 to 1975, which includes the deceased's name, age, marital status, nationality, date of death and location of grave. These records also include maps of locations of sepulchers within the cemetery.
