Biographical/Historical:     The Spanish land grant of Don Fernando de la Maza Arredondo was one of the largest in Florida, consisting of over 289,000 acres. In 1813, a grateful Spanish king awarded the land to Arredondo under the condition that Arredondo and his son settle 200 Spanish families on the land within three years of the date of transaction and exert themselves to augment Florida's population. Settlers came gradually and started the Alachua settlement in 1820. The United States confirmed the land grant claim in 1832.

Summary:     This collection contains a hand-colored photostat map that outlines the Arredondo land grant as of December 22, 1817. It features a color-coded identification of small land parcels such as Waldo, Alachua, LaCrosse, High Springs, Hawthorne, Gainesville, Archer and Micanopy. The area of the land grant lies in Alachua, Levy and Marion counties. Harvey S. Wells of the Pinellas Historical Commission colored and titled the map.
