Biographical/Historical:     Fred and Walter Andres came to Florida from the northeastern United States after reading an advertisement in the paper for Florida property in Marion County called "Ten Acres and Freedom." The brothers bought twenty acres and shipped off to Florida in the fall of 1914. They landed at Jacksonville, proceeded by train to Palatka, then to Ocala, and finally arrived at Ft. McCoy in the north central part of the state where their property was. They built a life of farming there, although neither had any farming experience.

Summary:     The collection consists of the memoirs of Fred Andres, called "Ten Acres and Freedom." He describes in lively fashion his homesteading experiences with his brother at Ft. McCoy, near Ocala, during the years 1914 to 1917. It includes an index of persons mentioned. Also included are the recollections of Melin Strother, who was a close friend of the Andres brothers.
