	Biographical/Historical:	In 1830 Augustus Steele, a bankrupted newsman, settled in Tampa Bay to avoid creditors. In 1831 he published Tampa Bay's first newspaper, calling it "The Gouger," which was a handwritten lampoon against all forms of authority.
	Summary:	The collection contains the premier edition of the handwritten lampoon, "The Gouger," printed at Tampa Bay on Monday, June 1831. The masthead reads "I gouge, Thou gougest, He gouges." The paper was "printed and published at OUR SHOP" and "edited by THREE OF US." There are two positive print reproductions of the original in the collection.
