Biographical/Historical:     The United States Congress created the U.S. Geological Survey in 1879 as an agency for the surveying and mapping of the United States. Its national mapping program has produced topographic maps covering every square inch of the U.S. Each map covers a specific quadrangle, which is a four-sided area bounded by parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. The topographic maps are line-and-symbol representations of natural and selected man-made features plotted to a definite scale.

Summary:     This series is an incomplete set of the United States Geological Survey quadrangle topographic maps for the State of Florida. The bulk of the collection date from the 1940s and 1950s. The collection includes an index, which is a map of Florida with a grid overlay that shows each quadrangle. Each quadrangle is identified by a code and the name of a city, town, or prominent natural feature within it.

There are three types of color-coded features shown on the maps: (1) water, including seas, lakes, rivers, canals, swamps and other bodies of water; (2) relief, including mountains, hills, valleys and other land features; and (3) culture (works of man), such as towns, cities, roads, churches, schools, cemeteries, parks, mines, railroads and boundaries.
