Biographical/Historical:     The Roux Crate and Lumber Company started out in 1895 as E.T. Roux and Son at Kent, Florida in Nassau County. The mill moved to Plant City in 1902 and expanded to include general building materials. Business was good and the firm soon spread throughout the southern and western parts of Florida, opening sawmills at Brooksville and Keysville, two large lumber manufacturing plants and a crate mill at Lake Garfield (established around 1915), and one of the largest veneer mills in the South at Mobile, Alabama. The crate mill produced crates for shipping fruit, mostly citrus. The company name changed to the Roux Crate and Lumber Company in 1921. Due to a depletion of timber resources, the company closed in 1948.

Summary:     The collection contains the records of the Roux Crate and Lumber Company at Lake Garfield (Polk County, Fla.) from 1921 until its closing in 1948. It primarily consists of business correspondence with other companies and individuals, but also includes tax and financial records, corporate meeting minutes and employee records.
