Biographical/Historical:     The Christ Church of Monticello was constituted largely due to the efforts of Henry Elwell, principal of the Jefferson Academy. Elwell instituted services and acted as lay reader until Rev. Francis P. Lee organized the parish of Christ Church as a Protestant Episcopal Church in 1840. The first building was constructed in 1843 on the corner of Washington and Waukeenah streets. A fire destroyed the building in 1883; the simple altar and a hand-pumped organ, imported from England in the 1850's were among the few items salvaged. The present structure was built in 1885 on the corner of Jefferson and High streets.

In 1887, a small mission called St. Clement's was founded in Lloyd, Florida. The congregation held services in an old grange hall until a wooden building was completed in 1894. In addition to their duties in Monticello, the priests from Christ Church served the parishioners at St. Clement's Mission. In 1957, the mission was moved to Tallahassee and merged into the Advent Church.
