Biographical/Historical:     In 1889, Albertus Vogt found vast amounts of hard rock phosphate near the town of Dunnellon, Florida. The following year, Vogt and other local citizens organized the Dunnellon Phosphate Company with Captain John L. Inglis, a distinguished Civil War veteran, as president. It sent its first shipments overseas to Hamburg and London in 1890, beginning a very successful and lucrative trade. By 1911, the company had twelve mines in operation.

Due to excessive freight rates, the company founders decided to handle their own shipping and established the Port Inglis Terminal Company in 1902. With no government assistance, the terminal company laid thirteen and one-half miles of railroad from Rockwell to Inglis on the Withlacoochee River, dredged the river there, and established a port on an island at the river's mouth.

Summary:     This collection contains financial records of the Dunnellon Phosphate Company including financial statements, real estate accounts and expenses of prospecting. It also includes an abstract of the Port Inglis Terminal Company expenses and a statement of exports and imports at Port Inglis from January 1, 1905 to December 31, 1905, a recapitulation of total commerce from September 25, 1902 to December 31, 1905 and an annual statement of the Port Inglis Terminal Company from 1930.
