Biographical/Historical:     In 1845, Bishop Portier of Mobile, Alabama bought Tallahassee's first property for the Catholic Church at a corner of Gadsden and McCarty Streets, where he had a chapel built and dedicated to Mater Dolorosa, or Sorrowful Mother. Missionaries from St. Augustine or Apalachicola served the chapel. The original Gothic chapel burned in 1847, so the congregation erected a new one, called St. Mary's, on the same site in 1853.

The church has relocated many times. In 1898, the congregation moved from Gadsden Street to the corner of North Monroe and Carolina streets. Until the 1960s, Blessed Sacrament was the only Catholic church in Tallahassee and thus experienced considerable expansion since its inception. In 1952, due to its increasing congregation, the church was relocated to its current site on Miccosukee Road. The congregation now worships in the second church built on this location, which was consecrated on May 19, 1983.
