Biographical/Historical:     The city of St Augustine established the St. Augustine Historical Preservation and Restoration Association as a non-profit organization to carry out an extensive restoration project in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Senate Bill 791 (Chapter 18146, Laws of Florida) appropriated $50,000 to restore and preserve the city. The use of the money was at the discretion of the city, which was to make semi-annual reports to the state comptroller.

The city had already formed a national committee that cooperated with the Carnegie Institution of Washington, D.C. to formulate a plan for such a restoration. Other entities involved in the planning were the American Council of Learned Societies, the Smithsonian Institution, the Social Science Research Council and the Carnegie Corporation. Private monetary contributions to the project totaled $25,000.

Summary:     The collection contains documents relating to the formation and accomplishments of the St. Augustine Historical Preservation and Restoration Association. It includes correspondence, telegrams, photographs and Verne E. Chatelain's historical study of the city. Chatelain was both chairman of the Association and a research associate of the Carnegie Institution of Washington.
