Biographical/Historical:     David Elwell Maxwell was born in Tallahassee in 1843 to William M. and Rebecca F. Maxwell. He attended area schools until 1857, when he left to study in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Entering the service of the Confederacy as a volunteer in 1861, he soon became a non-commissioned officer in the Second Florida Regiment. In 1863, he rose to the rank of Captain in the First Florida Cavalry Regiment. He saw action in major battles of the Eastern theater, including Sharpsburg and Fredericksburg.

    After the war, Maxwell began a career with the railroads in Florida. Starting out as a clerk, he worked his way up to become First Vice President in 1865 and general manager of the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad (F.C.P.R.) in 1889. He then became General State Agent in 1900, when Seaboard Airline Railroad took over F.C.P.R. He served in this capacity until his death in 1908.
