Biographical/Historical:     Brevard County was created by an act (Ch. 651, Laws) of the State Legislature on January 6, 1854.  Originally named St. Lucie County, Brevard County underwent one additional boundary change in 1905 (Ch. 5567, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of naturalization records for Brevard County, beginning in 1865.  The loose sheets contain:  declarations of intention (or petitions) wherein aliens declare their intent to renounce foreign allegiance, their oaths of United States allegiance, affidavits testifying to the good character of the applicants, certificates of arrival in the United States, and naturalization certificates.  The declaration of intention includes information such as name, birthdate, occupation, physical description, country of origin, and date of arrival in the United States.  This series is not indexed, although the names do appear to be arranged in alphabetic order.
