Biographical/Historical:     Baker County was created by an act (Ch. 1185, Laws) of the State Legislature on February 8, 1861.  Originally part of New River County, Baker County underwent one additional boundary change in 1911 (Ch. 6244, laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of county records.
Summary:     This series consists of microfilmed copies of tax books for Baker County beginning in 1877. The tax books for each year include the individual's name, description of land, number of acres, the land's value, the types of animals and their value, and the value of the individual's personnal property, real estate, and aggregate total value.  Also listed are the assessed taxes for state, county, county school, and county special taxes.  The beginning of each book has instructions to the tax assessor and the tax collector.
    The majority of the books are not indexed, although the names appear to be listed alphabetically.  The books for the years 1889, 1890, 1891, and 1892 are indexed.  Several of the volumes have pages which are damaged and are illegible.
