Biographical/Historical:     Baker County was created by an act (Ch. 1185, Laws) of the State Legislature on February 8, 1861.  Originally part of New River County, Baker County underwent one additional boundary change in 1911 (Ch. 6244, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of the records.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the mortgage records of Baker County, Florida beginning in October 1876.  A mortgage is a conditional transfer of legal title to real property as a security for payment of a debt.  It is much like a deed in its form, but if the conditions prescribed within are met, the conveyance becomes void.
