Biographical/Historical:     Clay Memorial Hospital was located in Clay County in the city of Green Cove Springs, Florida.  The hospital opened in 1959 and closed in 1992.  The hospital was a public, non-profit hospital authorized by Florida Chapter Law 30280 passed in 1955.  This law created the Clay County Hospital District and the Clay County Hospital Authority, and authorized the construction of a public hospital in Green Cove Springs.  The facility was constructed on a 25 acre site donated by the Reinhold family.

The Clay County Hospital Authority contracted with Methodist Hospital to manage the hospital in 1976.  In 1986 Park Healthcare took over the management.  In July 1991, with the hospital facing increasing financial problems, Clay Medical, Inc. was formed.  Clay Medical took over the management of the existing facilities and planned to build a new hospital.  In March 1992 Clay Medical discontinued its efforts.  The hospital closed temporarily on August 5, 1992.

The Clay County Hospital Authority contracted with AmerHealth, Inc. in October 1992 in an attempt to reopen.  However, Amerihealth only managed for one month.  The hospital closed permanently on November 9, 1992.  Although the Clay County Hospital Authority Board pursued many different options, the hospital was unable to reopen.

Chapter Law 97-79 repealed Chapter 30280 (1955), and terminated the Clay County Hospital District and the Clay County Hospital Authority.

Summary:     This series consists of the administrative and financial records documenting the operations of Clay Memorial Hospital and the Clay County Hospital Authority.  The primary administrative records of interest are the Board Minutes of the Clay County Hospital Authority and the Board Minutes of the medical staff of Clay Memorial Hospital.

Also of interest are the various financial records of the Clay County Hospital Authority and the Board members which detail the financial problems faced by Clay Memorial Hospital and the struggle the Board faced in trying to keep the hospital open and in trying to reopen once the hospital was closed.
