The focus was on student achievement standards, the means by which we fund our educational system, the status of the education personnel system, capital infrastructure, and technological infrastructive.
The objectives of the Commission were to: 1) achieve consensus on a strategic plan for raising Florida educational achievement over the next decade; 2) produce a comprehensive technology strategy for public schools and postsecondary education; 3) investigate the adequacy and equity of public education funding, and make appropriate recommendations; 4) analyze Florida's education governance structure and make appropriate recommendations; 5) improve readiness for school and ameliorate external barriers to students' meeting higher academic standards; and 6) recommend appropriate reforms in professionalization efforts, teacher training and retraining, increase diversity of the education workforce, collective bargaining practices, staffing patterns and other workforce changes that could enhance student learning.
The Commission organized itself into six Committees representing functional areas: 1) Funding Committee; 2) Standards and Achievement Committee; 3) Readiness and External Barriers to Learning Committee; 4) Education Workforce Committee; 5) Governance Committee; and 6) Technology Committee.
