Biographical/Historical:     The Governor's Commission on Education was created by Executive Order of the Governor in September of 1996. The purpose of the Commission was to develop consensus about meeting Florida's education challenges for the next decade and to assist in accomplishing that task.
In pursuing and achieving its purpose, the Commission looked at the overall education system in Florida pre-kindergarten through post-secondary. The focus was on student achievement standards, the means by which we fund our educational system, the status of the education personnel system, capital infrastructure, and technological infrastructure.
The objectives of the Commission were: 1) achieve consensus on a strategic plan for raising Florida educational achievement over the next decade; 2) produce a comprehensive technology strategy for public schools and postsecondary education; 3) investigate the adequacy and equity of public education funding, and make appropriate recommendations; 4) analyze Florida's education governance structure and make appropriate recommendations; 5) improve readiness for school and ameliorate external barriers to students' meeting higher academic standards; and 6) recommend appropriate reforms in professionalization efforts, teacher training and retraining, increased diversity of the education workforce, collective bargaining practices, staffing patterns, and other workforce changes that could enhance student learning.
The Commission organized itself into six Committees representing functional areas: 1) Funding Committee; 2) Standards and Achievement Committee; 3) Readiness and External Barriers to Learning Committee; 4) Education Workforce Committee; 5) Governance Committee; and 6) Technology Committee.
Summary:     The series contains files and audio cassettes documenting the proceedings of regular meetings of the Commission, including full Commission meetings and Committee meetings.  Meeting files include agenda and background materials provided to members to prepare for the meetings such as committee reports, draft reports, studies, articles and newspaper clippings. The series also contains memoranda and correspondence among Commission members and others detailing the activities of the Commission meetings and different Committee meetings.
