Biographical/Historical:     Hamilton County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on December 26, 1827.  Hamilton County was originally a part of Jefferson County.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the guardianship records of Hamilton County, Florida from about 1890 to 1925.  The series includes records of guardianship (1891-1921) and letters (or petitions) of guardianship (ca. 1890-1925).  Guardians were appointed by the court when a decedent was survived by minor children who by law were not considered capable of managing their own affairs.
    The records of guardianship contain annual returns from estates managed by a guardian.  The letters (or petitions) of guardianship contain the name of the person petitioning to be appointed guardian, and the name and ages of the minors.  The letters do not indicate whether the individual was appointed as guardian and are undated. Both volumes contain an index.
