Biographical/Historical:     DeSoto County was created by an act (Ch. 3770, Laws) of the State Legislature on May 19, 1887 from a portion of Manatee County. A subsequent act (Ch. 8513, Laws) of the State Legislature on April 23, 1921 formed four additional counties from DeSoto: Hardee, Highlands, Glades and Charlotte.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     The series consists of the deed records of DeSoto County, Florida from 1887 to 1926.  The series includes deeds (1887-1926) and direct and reverse indexes to deeds (1889-1904).  In the broadest sense, a deed (or conveyance) is a legal instrument by which real property is transferred from one party to another.  Deed books contain many types of title conveyances and contracts.  Among the most common types are warranty deeds, quitclaim deeds, and deeds of gift.
