Biographical/Historical:     Walton County was created by an act of the Florida Legislative Council on December 29, 1824 (Laws).  It was formed from the eastern portion of Jackson County.  Walton County's boundaries were altered several times over the years.  The creation of Holmes County in 1848 altered the northeastern portion.  A boudary change with Santa Rosa County in 1852 altered the western portion.  The creation of Okaloosa County in 1915altered the western half of Walton County. The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records for Walton County, Florida from 1885 to 1972.  The series contains an index by grooms' names only (1885-1972), marriage record books (1885-1952), and marriage license affidavits (1919-1927).
    Marriage record books consist of the recorded copies of marriage licenses.  They document when a couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony. The individual record books contain indexes listing the names of the brides.
    Affidavits for marriage licenses state the couples age at the time of application.  If either of the couple were underage, the affidavits contains the parent or guardians consent for the marriage to take place.  Affidavits could either be a part of the application for marriage license or a separate document.  These are indexed only by the groom's name.
