Biographical/Historical:     Santa Rosa County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on February 18, 1842 (Territorial Laws, 1842, No. 1).  It was formed from the eastern section of Escambia County.  In 1852, Santa Rosa's boundary with Walton County was altered slightly (Ch. 571, Laws).  Some Santa Rosa court records were destroyed by a county courthouse fire in 1869.  In 1915, Okaloosa County was created in part from the eastern portion of Santa Rosa County (Ch. 6937, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Santa Rosa County, Florida from 1869 to 1956.  The series includes marriage record books (1869-1956) and marriage applications and licenses (1920-1950).
Marriage record books (or marriage license records) consist of the recorded copies of marriage licenses.  They document when a couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony.  Each book contains an index to grooms' last names.
Applications for marriage licenses document the applicants' names, ages, race, birthplaces, occupations, and whether either of the applicants had been previously married.  Applications sometimes include affidavits and, once completed, were often used as the marriage license, containing the date of the wedding and who performed the ceremony.  The records dated 1920-1927 consist of both applications and licenses, whereas the records dated 1928-1950 consist only of applications.  Reel 20 contains applications (1936-1939) which appear to be duplicates of those on reel 16 but in a different order.
