Biographical/Historical:     Flagler County was created by an act (Ch. 7399, Laws) of the State Legislature on April 28, 1917.  It was formed from portions of St. Johns and Volusia Counties.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Flagler County, Florida from 1917 to 1973.  The series includes an index of marriage records (1919-1973), a marriage record book (1917-1973), and marriage license applications and licenses (1917-1928).
      Record books document when the couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony. Applications for marriage license document the applicants' names, age, race, birthplace, occupation, and whether either of the applicants had previously been married.  Applications sometimes included affidavits and once completed were often used as the marriage license, containing the date of the wedding and who performed the ceremony.
    Marriage licenses are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  That person filled out the portion of the license certifying that the marriage took place and the license was returned to the clerk of the court. The applications and licenses are not indexed.
