Biographical/Historical:     Calhoun County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on January 26, 1838.  Originally part of Washington and Jackson counties, Calhoun underwent several boundary changes until 1925. The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Calhoun County from 1862 to 1963.  The series consists of bound record books, loose marriage licenses, and affidavits of age.  The record books (1862-1963) document when the couple applied for the marriage license, when they got married, and who performed the ceremony.  All of the record books contain indexes.  Record from May 1939 to February 1941 were not microfilmed or are missing.
    The loose marriage licenses (c.1890's-1927) are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  The information on the license includes name of couple and where they were from.  After the wedding ceremony was performed the couple returned the license to the clerk of the court.  the loose marriage licenses are not indexed.  Many of these records have no consistent order nor are they indexed.
    The series also includes marriage affidavits from 1919 to 1927. The affidavit states the age of age of the couple at the time of application.  If either of the couple was underage, a consent affidavit was filled out by the parent or guardian giving permission for the marriage to take place.
